01. The inventor
Joe Moore filed the patent for the first non-inserted nasal filter in the late 2000s. By 2011 he was on Shark Tank pitching the finished product; the panel made one of the largest single offers in the show's history at that time.
He turned it down. First Defense Nasal Screens have been on shelves around the world since.
02. Manufacturing
Every screen is made by Marian Inc. in Indianapolis. Their facility is FDA-registered and ISO 13485 certified, the same quality system Marian uses for its medical-component clients.
Marian's engineers chose the pressure-sensitive adhesive and the non-woven polyester filter media, and have manufactured the product through thirteen package variants and three sizes since the first run.
03. The sizes
The screens come in Small, Medium, and Large. From left: a US quarter, close in size to a one-euro coin, beside S, M, and L for scale.
Each carrier sheet holds one pair, one screen for each nostril. Seven sheets per pouch is roughly a week of daily wear.
04. Patents
The original US patent (US 9,132,300 B2) is one of more than 170 issued worldwide. First Defense Nasal Screens are distributed in over 40 countries today; this site serves Cyprus and Greece.
05. On a face
The screens sit on the outside of each nostril. The outer ring is a clear, flexible plastic frame; the filter media inside is non-woven polyester. From an arm's length, they are barely visible.
